To sustainably improve transparency, controllability and usability in the existing SAP Portfolio and Project Management (PPM), Wien Energie — together with sophisTex — decided to modernize the SAP PPM environment and, at the same time, position it for the future with a view to SAP S/4HANA.

The Challenge

Complex user interface with low acceptance

SAP PPM had already been established at Wien Energie for many years as the central platform for project and portfolio management. In day-to-day operations, however, it became increasingly clear that the standard interface of SAP PPM could only meet the requirements of modern users to a limited extent.

Project managers and business users perceived the existing user interface as confusing, complex and, in many areas, too slow. Maintaining project data required navigation through numerous levels, tabs, menus and submenus. At the same time, partially long loading times led to declining acceptance of the system.

The consequences were clearly noticeable:

  • low platform usage,
  • inconsistent or outdated project data,
  • high training and support effort,
  • as well as limited use of SAP PPM as a holistic steering instrument.

Wien Energie therefore pursued a clear goal: to create a significantly more intuitive, faster and more user-friendly solution that increases acceptance, improves data quality and reduces operational effort.

The Solution

sophisTex PPM Process Package

After evaluating various approaches — from individual Fiori development to standard solutions — Wien Energie chose the sophisTex PPM Process Package. Decisive factors were, in particular, the native SAP Fiori interface, the high flexibility through low-code/no-code approaches, the continuous product evolution, and the compatibility with SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA.

With the add-on, Wien Energie obtained a modern and high-performance SAP PPM user interface:

  • intuitive Fiori-based applications,
  • centralized data entry on a unified interface,
  • significantly faster response times,
  • mobile usability on smartphones and tablets,
  • as well as flexibly configurable interfaces for different use cases.

At the same time, the existing SAP PPM standard logic was preserved in the background, thereby ensuring investment protection and a smooth transition toward SAP S/4HANA.

Successful implementation through co-creation

A key success factor of the project was the close collaboration between Wien Energie and sophisTex. Business departments, PMO and IT worked together in a co-creation approach to align the solution optimally with the actual requirements of the users. Instead of a lengthy conceptual project, the focus was on rapid usability, iterative further development and immediate added value.

The implementation approach was based on clear principles:

  • standardization before individualization,
  • step-by-step expansion along priorities,
  • early integration of user feedback,
  • as well as individual developments only where they create real added value.

As a result, Wien Energie was able to introduce new functions step by step and continuously develop the solution further together with sophisTex.

Improved performance and higher user acceptance

With the introduction of the sophisTex PPM Process Package, Wien Energie was able to significantly increase both the user experience and the efficiency in project management.

The new Fiori-based interface considerably simplified navigation, reduced the effort involved in data maintenance and accelerated daily work processes. Shorter loading times and optimized interfaces led to noticeably higher acceptance among project managers and users.

The introduction of the sophisTex PPM Process Package has significantly increased acceptance and usage among our project managers. The simplified data entry leads to noticeably better data quality – a decisive foundation for efficient project portfolio reporting and targeted steering.

The Challenge
Prior to partnering with sophisTex, Covestro relied on the legacy PLM 7 Engineering Record to manage a wide range of scenarios, including product registrations, management of change (MOC) processes, and product cancellations, supported by an external add-on for complex change processes. As part of their digital transformation aligned with SAP’s roadmap, Covestro migrated to SAP Cloud ERP Private, where the Engineering Record is replaced by the S/4HANA Change Record. However, the standard functionality fell short of meeting their specific business requirements for complex workflow processes, process simulation, MDG-M integration, and other advanced capabilities.
The Solution
To address these gaps, Covestro implemented sophisTex eXtended Change Management (XCM). This add-on enhances the standard SAP S/4HANA Change Record with powerful, enterprise-grade features and introduces additional capabilities to meet Covestro’s end-to-end requirements while following industry best practices. With XCM, Covestro benefits from the flexibility and advanced functionality they needed, including configurable workflow tasks, automated task creation, Process Simulation, dynamic agent determination based on Teams and Responsibilities, dynamic field control, and seamless integration with MDG-M. XCM also enabled the migration of PLM 7 records to the S/4HANA Change Record and supported mass creation and migration of Team Hierarchies from the legacy ACM system. As a result, Covestro achieved a smooth transition to SAP Cloud ERP Private, aligned with SAP’s Clean Core strategy, ensuring scalability and long-term sustainability.

Before working with sophisTex on the Pricing Intelligence Board (PIB) project, DMK lacked a dedicated, scalable cloud-based application to support its highly time-sensitive sales processes. The Solution
sophisTex developed a dedicated, cloud-native sales application running on SAP BTP / ABAP Cloud — designed specifically to meet these demanding requirements. ADM, formerly operating under the WILD Flavors brand, required a reliable and efficient way to calculate a wide range of physical and chemical product properties to meet customer requirements and ensure regulatory compliance. The existing customer-specific Z-application no longer provided the flexibility and standardization needed for their growing Recipe Development processes.
The Solution
To address these challenges, ADM implemented the sophisTex Generic Recipe Calculations solution, enhancing the standard SAP PLM 7 Recipe Development environment based on SAP ECC 6.0 EhP7. Working closely with sophisTex experts, ADM successfully introduced both the sophisTex solution and SAP PLM Recipe Development functionality in a smooth and efficient implementation project.
